Tsiodras to the Commission: Ensuring access to essential services for the elderly

It highlights that "technological tools and applications in various sectors (e.g., transport, banking) often overlook the needs of groups like the elderly"

Newsroom December 13 02:41

In a question to the European Commission, Dimitris Tsiodras, a member of the ND and ELP MEP, calls for ensuring access to essential services for the elderly.

Specifically, he asks the Commission how it will contribute to facilitating transactions for the elderly and improving accessibility to services, ensuring face-to-face transactions.

Tsiodras notes that “technological tools and applications used in several sectors (e.g. transport, banking) do not always take into account the needs of people such as the elderly.”

At the same time, it says, “the reasonably complex procedures for ensuring the security of transactions and personal data, combined with the fear of becoming victims of fraud, makes it difficult for them to exercise their rights and access many services.”

He concluded by underlining that “further steps are necessary towards supporting and empowering them even though the existing legislative framework, such as the European Accessibility Act, has contributed towards improving the operation of the internal market for accessible products and services.”
