AEGIS: Greece will be equipped with weather stations and radars in the next 19 months

The purpose of these actions is to upgrade the prevention and early preparation for extreme weather events

According to Public Protection sources, in the first few months of 2025, among other things, a contract will be signed for the supply and installation of seven networks of meteorological radars across the country, which will have the necessary infrastructure. The new weather stations and radars come to fill a gap that has existed for over 20 years in the country, as the Minister of Climate Change and Civil Protection, B. Kikilias. The purpose of these actions is to upgrade prevention and early preparation for extreme weather events.

With the supply of meteorological stations for the early warning of natural disasters as well as emergency communication stations and the provision of climatological data for areas of interest, projects amounting to more than 36 million euros, the aim is to improve the imaging of current weather conditions and, above all, the quality of the forecasts produced both for the area of installation and for the whole territory, promoting the levels of forecasting and safety.

In particular, the fixed meteorological radars are planned to be installed in new and existing operating sites of the EMU meteorological radar network. Specifically, according to information, among the areas expected to be installed are Kavala, Thessaloniki, Preveza, Andravida, while areas such as Skyros, Larissa, Aegina, Ymittos, Chania, Kalamata and Kythera are also being considered.

At the same time, in the framework of the AIGIS program, as it was known from Civil Protection circles, the supply of a short-term forecasting system (Nowcasting) with the necessary software and equipment (servers, etc.), as well as a system for the production of automated updates and warnings, which will be installed at EMY and the Regional Meteorological Center of Larissa as a backup.

Furthermore, the contract to be signed – estimated within the first two months of 2025 – also includes the expansion of the National Network of Meteorological Stations (NEMS) of EMY with the supply, installation and operation of a network of a total of 30 systems of Hydrological Automatic Meteorological Stations, the installation and operation of a network of a total of 12 systems for the detection of Atmospheric Electrical Discharges, the installation and operation of two systems for the reception and processing of data from meteorological satellites as well as the general upgrade of the
