The President of Mexico declares she will defend the Country’s sovereignty after Donald Trump’s executive orders

Claudia Sheinbaum referred to the executive orders on illegal immigration, stating that Mexico will act in a "humanitarian" manner

Newsroom January 21 07:15

The President of Mexico emphasized today that she will defend her country’s sovereignty and independence while also seeking dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump. This statement comes a day after Trump began his new term with a barrage of executive orders, including measures aimed at curbing immigration.

In her first comments following Trump’s inauguration, Claudia Sheinbaum remarked that some of his initial announcements are very similar to measures he had taken during his previous term. She also sought to reassure Mexicans that her government will firmly defend their interests.

“With regard to the executive orders that President Donald Trump signed yesterday, I would like to say this: The people of Mexico can rest assured that we will always defend our sovereignty and independence,” said Sheinbaum, flanked by two key ministers. “It is always important to remain calm,” she added.

Responding to Trump’s initial moves to halt irregular migration, Sheinbaum said her government will act in a “humanitarian” manner, while also promising to repatriate foreign migrants to their countries of origin.

Trump is expected to sign more executive orders today, during his second day in office. These follow measures issued yesterday, Monday, which included designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations and hinting that tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports to the U.S. could take effect as early as February.

During her regular morning press conference, Sheinbaum noted that although Trump signed an executive order declaring irregular migration along the U.S.-Mexico border a state of emergency, she will insist on respect for the people of her country.

She also reiterated that her government will seek coordination on security and other matters with its northern neighbor and that it is committed to revisiting trade terms in 2026.

The peso briefly reduced its losses during Sheinbaum’s remarks, though it later returned to its earlier levels, posting the worst performance among a basket of global reference currencies.
