During the regular briefing of journalists in Agyra, Turkish Defense Ministry sources admitted that Ankara sent the corvette north of Crete, where the two Italian research vessels were conducting surveys in international waters for the laying of the Cyprus-Crete electrical interconnection cable, because, they said, “Turkey has interests there.”

“In areas where we have rights and interests, as we have done in the past, we will make the necessary interventions in the activities that Greece is attempting to conduct by imposing ultimatums,” the Turkish MoD sources said, noting that Greek vessels conducting such activities are warned by radio.

The Turkish corvette was monitoring the operations from a distance of 10 nautical miles and was harassed by radio, stating that the area is not under Greek jurisdiction.
