A 54-year-old woman died in the intensive care unit of the Pyrgos Hospital early Saturday morning, with alarming symptoms suggestive of meningitis.

The woman by Friday afternoon showed the first symptoms and an immediate high fever. The event alarmed her family and they immediately took her to the hospital.

Her health deterioration was immediate and doctors intubated her and took her to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment, where she died after a few hours.

According to information from ilialive.gr, a sample examined by the microbiology laboratory showed that it is a strain of meningococcus, which along with the other symptoms refers to meningitis. In any case, doctors will also wait for the results of the sample culture to have a clear picture.

The EODY has been informed and the health authorities of Patras, who are monitoring the situation. The tracing of the woman’s contacts has already begun. Colleagues from the work of the unfortunate woman have already been informed and have received preventive medication.

Case of bacterial meningitis in a 17-year-old student in Chania after a school trip to the Czech Republic

“We haven’t concluded yet, we are looking into it and waiting for the cultures. There will be a forensic examination and I estimate that we will soon have the overall results. Samples have been taken by the authorities in Patras and Athens. The EODY has been informed and we are all looking to find out as soon as possible what happened.

“It did come as a septic shock. When a young person goes into septic shock, many things can cause it. So we need to find out what happened. We can’t say for sure that it’s meningitis, but when you have a young person who has this happen, you have to run it as fast as possible. So for a lot of reasons and social reasons, we run whatever test needs to be done quickly to isolate the strain and find the possible cause.

“We because of the incident with the student are on high alert. There is great vigilance in case there is a similar incident,” he concluded.
