SYRIZA calls for elections following political realignment to PASOK

"Obviously, when we call for a motion of no confidence against Mr. Mitsotakis, we mean that if he loses the confidence of the Parliament, he will fall, and we will have elections," says the statement

SYRIZA Progressive Alliance is intensifying its attack on the government, as the defection of Rania Thraskia from Koumoundourou to PASOK, with an intermediate stage of her independence, has raised alarms among senior members of her former party.

Following yesterday’s statement by the President of SYRIZA-PS, Socrates Famelos, who referred to the “delegitimized prime minister,” prompting a strong reaction from the spokesperson of New Democracy, Nikos Romanos, today, SYRIZA’s spokesperson, Giorgos Karameros, took it a step further.

“Obviously, when we call for a motion of no confidence against Mr. Mitsotakis, we mean that if he loses the confidence of the Parliament, he will fall, and we will have elections. Is there any Greek today who believes that Mr. Mitsotakis has the confidence of the majority of society?

Of course, we must go to elections. That’s where everyone will take responsibility,” emphasized Mr. Karameros on Action24, with Koumoundourou officially calling for elections for the first time.

It is worth noting that yesterday, Socrates Famelos had explained that “we should not wait any longer. A motion of no confidence against the ND government and a dangerous prime minister should be submitted here and now.”

However, the sharp escalation of rhetoric from SYRIZA-PS is not unrelated to today’s meeting between PASOK President Nikos Androulakis and independent MP Rania Thraskia, as the latter was elected in Thessaloniki’s A’ district with SYRIZA-PS in the last elections and left the party after Socrates Famelos was elected leader of Koumoundourou. This is especially notable as independent MP Petros Pappas is expected to follow the same path, while the flirtation of a potential SYRIZA-New Left cooperation has failed.
