Severe weather “Coral”: Intense cold wave starting today with a temperature drop of up to 10 degrees – Where it will snow

Which areas will see temperatures drop to -5°C – Snowfall expected in Attica on Friday – Forecast through Sunday

A gradual deterioration of the weather is expected from today through the coming Monday. The intense cold wave, named “Coral,” will impact both Greece and the broader region of Southeastern Europe.

Temperatures will gradually drop by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in Northern and Eastern Greece, with the lowest temperatures expected over the weekend.

Gale-force northerly winds will dominate the Aegean, reaching 7 and locally up to 8 on the Beaufort scale. At the same time, two disturbances will bring snowfall, mainly affecting northern, central, and eastern mainland regions, as well as the Aegean islands and Crete.

A. Breakdown of the First Disturbance in Terms of Forecasted Temperatures and Snowfall

TEMPERATURES:

Wednesday (19-02-25)

a) In Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the northeastern Aegean islands, temperatures will range from -3°C to 7-8°C, and in some parts of Thessaly, up to 9°C.

b) In central and eastern Sterea, Evia, and eastern Peloponnese, temperatures will range from 1°C to 10-12°C, reaching up to 13°C in parts of eastern Peloponnese.

Thursday (20-02-25)

a) In central Macedonia and Thessaly, temperatures will range from -4°C to 7-8°C.

b) In central and eastern Sterea and Evia, temperatures will range from -2°C to 9-10°C.

Friday (21-02-25)

a) In eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the northeastern Aegean islands, temperatures will range from -5°C to 4-5°C, while in western and central Macedonia, they will range from -4°C to 5-6°C.

b) In Thessaly, central and eastern Sterea, and Evia, temperatures will range from -1°C to 7-8°C.

c) In eastern Peloponnese, temperatures will range from 0°C to 9-10°C.

SNOWFALL:

Wednesday (19-02-25)

a) In Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the northeastern Aegean islands, snowfall will begin in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas in the morning, gradually reaching lower altitudes. In the northeastern mainland, snowfall will gradually weaken by nighttime.

b) In central and eastern Sterea, Evia, and eastern Peloponnese, snowfall will begin in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas around midday.

c) In the mountains of Crete, snowfall will start in the evening.

Thursday (20-02-25)

a) In central Macedonia, Thessaly, central and eastern Sterea, and Evia, snowfall will begin in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas in the morning and gradually extend to lower altitudes.

b) In Crete, snowfall will start in mountainous areas in the morning and gradually extend to semi-mountainous regions.

Friday (21-02-25)

a) In western and central Macedonia, Thessaly, the northern and eastern Aegean islands, central and eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia, and eastern Peloponnese, snowfall will start in the morning, affecting mountainous, semi-mountainous, and even lower-altitude areas.

b) In the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of Crete.

B. Second Disturbance

The second disturbance, which based on current data is expected to move across Greece over the weekend and into Monday, will be analyzed in the coming days. However, starting today, you can get a general picture from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service’s website (www.emy.gr) under the General Weather Forecast section through Sunday. Stay updated through official Meteoalarm warnings for Greece and Europe.

Snowfall will occur in mountainous areas, semi-mountainous regions of central and northern Greece, and even lower-altitude areas in northern Greece and Thessaly. Frost is expected overnight and early in the morning in central and northern mainland areas.

  • Epirus: -1°C to 1°C
  • Thessaly: -2°C to 7°C

  • Northeastern Aegean islands: 5°C to 12°C
  • Central and Southern Aegean: 8°C to 16°C
  • Ionian Sea: 5°C to 15°C
  • Crete: 9°C to 17°C

Winds:

  • From northern directions in the west at 3-6 Beaufort
  • In the Aegean, up to 7 Beaufort

Athens: Cloudy with local showers and snowfall in mountainous areas. Winds from the northeast at 4-6 Beaufort. Temperature: 3°C to 11°C.

Thessaloniki: Cloudy with local rain and snow in mountainous/semi-mountainous areas, temporarily extending to lower altitudes. Northeastern winds at 4-6 Beaufort. Temperature: 2°C to 6°C.

Weather on Thursday (20-02-2025)

Increased cloudiness with light local rain and sleet in Thessaly, the Sporades, central and eastern Sterea, Evia, the western Cyclades, and Crete. Temporary morning precipitation in central Macedonia. Snowfall will occur in central Macedonia, Thessaly, central and eastern Sterea, Evia, and Crete, initially in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas, later reaching lower altitudes.

Winds:

  • In the west, from the east at 4-5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 in southern seas.
  • In the east, from the north-northeast at 4-6 Beaufort, up to 7 in the Aegean.
  • In the Dodecanese, from the north-northwest at 5-7 Beaufort.

Temperature: Slight drop across the country, remaining 3-5 degrees below seasonal norms. Frost expected in central and northern mainland areas during morning and evening hours.

Weather on Friday (21-02-2025)

Increased cloudiness with occasional light rain or sleet in eastern and southern mainland Greece, Crete, the southern Ionian, and the Aegean (excluding the Dodecanese). Snowfall in western and central Macedonia, Thessaly, northern and eastern Aegean islands, central and eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia, and eastern Peloponnese. Snow also expected in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Crete.

Winds:

  • In the west, from the east at 4-5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 in southern seas.
  • In the east, from the north-northeast at 4-6 Beaufort, up to 7-8 in the Aegean.
  • In the Dodecanese, from the north-northwest at 6-7 Beaufort.

Temperature: Further drop, staying below seasonal norms.

The Weather on Saturday, 22-02-2025

In the eastern and southern mainland, central Macedonia, and the Aegean (excluding the Dodecanese), increased cloud cover with light local showers or sleet. In the rest of the country, a few clouds, temporarily more dense. Snowfall is expected in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, as well as in lower-altitude regions of the eastern and northern parts of the country, in the mountains of Evia and Crete, and in the northern and eastern Aegean islands.

Winds will blow from the east at 4 to 5 Beaufort in the west, from the north at 5 to 6 Beaufort in the east, and locally in the Aegean at 7, possibly reaching 8 Beaufort, weakening in the afternoon.

Temperature will drop slightly further and remain lower than usual for the season. Frost will occur in places across the mainland.

The Weather on Sunday, 23-02-2025

Cloud cover, temporarily increased, is expected across the country (except for Macedonia, Thrace, and the Dodecanese), with light local showers or sleet. Snowfall will occur in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, as well as in lower-altitude regions of the eastern and northern parts of the country and in the northern and eastern Aegean islands.

Winds will be variable at 3 Beaufort in the west, while in the Ionian, they will blow from the east-southeast at 4 Beaufort. In the east, winds will come from the north at 5 to 6 Beaufort, and locally in the Aegean at 7 Beaufort.

Temperature will not show any significant change. Frost will occur in places across the mainland.
