Newsroom February 24 04:30

A woman who left a strong imprint on Piraeus and local government was the one who was found dead, after a fire at her house in Vouliagmeni early this morning: It was Paschalia Kalagia – Karamalakou, for many years a municipal councilor and deputy mayor of Piraeus. Paschalia Kalaya-Karamalakou was first elected as a councilor in Piraeus in 1986 and was re-elected in successive elections.
In 2011 she had her leg amputated during the process of docking the yacht she was aboard at the port of Lavrio. Paschalina Kalagia-Karamalakou was born in Piraeus and was married to doctor Ilias Kalagia, who passed away four years ago. They had two daughters, Nota and Maria, who was a candidate for parliament with the New Democracy Party in 2019.

The fire broke out in the house from an as yet unknown cause and inside, apart from Paschalia Kalagia, were her two daughters, who were rescued by the fire brigade and taken to hospital for first aid as they were experiencing breathing problems from the smoke they had inhaled.
