War in Ukraine: Journalist killed by Russian bombing in Bucha

At least 5 people killed and 8 wounded in strikes in Kostyantynivka - Russia attacked Ukraine with nearly 200 drones overnight

Newsroom February 26 07:15

At least five people have been killed in Russian strikes in the city of Kondyadinivka in eastern Ukraine, regional authorities said today, and a Ukrainian journalist was killed in a drone attack in the Kyiv region, according to her employer.

“At least 5 people were killed and 8 wounded in strikes in Kostyadinivka,” the governor of Donetsk’s eastern Donetsk region, Vadim Filachkin, said in a Telegram post, without specifying when they took place.

According to him, three guided air bombs hit this town, which is frequently targeted by the Russian military and is about 15 kilometers from frontline sectors such as Chashiv Yar and Toretsk, where Russian forces are gaining ground.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian media outlet Ukrinform today announced the death in the Kyiv region of its journalist, Tatiana Kulik, whose house in the Bucha district, near the Ukrainian capital, was hit by a Russian drone.

The governor of the Kyiv region, Mikola Kalashnik, had said this morning that the body of a woman was found in a house near the town of Bucha, where firefighters were struggling to bring a fire caused by that attack under control.

Early this afternoon he said a second body was found in the ruins of the house, but noted that it has not yet been identified by authorities.

He also said two people were injured elsewhere in the district. A woman born in 2005 required outpatient treatment for a head injury, while a man born in 1981 was injured in the arm by a crystal shard. A total of 9 homes were damaged in the Bucha area.

AFP reporters in Kyiv heard powerful explosions just before midnight yesterday, Tuesday.

Russia attacked Ukraine with nearly 200 drones overnight, mainly targeting the Kyiv region and energy facilities in the eastern part of the country, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses shot down 110 of a total of 177 Russian drones of various kinds launched against Ukrainian territory overnight, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Air Force.

It added that 66 drones were “lost”, a term it uses about the use of electronic means to change the direction of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles without causing damage.

Moscow has stepped up its drone strikes in Ukraine in recent weeks, and on Sunday launched 267 drones against Ukrainian territory, a record number in three years of war.

Today, moreover, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russian forces have regained control of two settlements in Russia’s western Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces seized parts of territory after launching a cross-border offensive in August.

Reuters was unable to verify from an independent source the Russian ministry’s statement that Russian forces had recaptured the settlements of Pogrebki and Orlovka.
