David Schwimmer calls out Hollywood’s silence on antisemitism

David Schwimmer, best known for his role as Ross Geller in Friends, isn’t one to stay silent when it comes to issues that matter

Newsroom March 9 03:00

The 58-year-old actor recently took the stage at the Never is Now conference, hosted by the Anti-Defamation League in New York, and didn’t hold back. His message? Hollywood stars who have built their careers on Jewish representation need to speak up against antisemitism—especially now.

A Bold Statement in a Time of Silence

Schwimmer’s speech comes just weeks after he publicly urged Elon Musk to ban Kanye West from X, following the rapper’s latest antisemitic remarks. But this time, his words weren’t aimed at just one person. Instead, he called out the many entertainment industry figures who have either highlighted their Jewish identity or played Jewish roles on screen—yet remain silent when it comes to real-world hate.

“Many people I admire, even some of my personal heroes in entertainment, music, and sports, have chosen to stay quiet,” Schwimmer stated. “Some have built their careers embracing their Jewish heritage, while others have gained fame portraying Jewish characters. And while some are working behind the scenes, far too many have opted to say nothing publicly. If I could speak to them directly, I’d say: I wish you would.”

A Call for Solidarity

Schwimmer’s message was clear—silence isn’t enough. He emphasized that using one’s platform to stand against hate is more crucial than ever. “I wish you’d stand tall. I wish you’d speak out, because your voice matters—to your fans, to your community, and to those who desperately need solidarity right now.”

Importantly, Schwimmer wasn’t asking for celebrities to solve the crisis in the Middle East. Instead, his plea was simple: publicly support Jewish friends, colleagues, and neighbors against hatred. He highlighted the rise of antisemitism on college campuses, in schools, and even in Jewish-owned businesses, stressing that now is the time to take a stand.

David Schwimmer has always been known for his wit and charm, but in moments like these, he proves that his voice carries weight far beyond the world of sitcoms. His speech serves as a powerful reminder that influence comes with responsibility—and in times of injustice, silence is never the answer.
