Weather: Weekend with 30s and African dust – Showers and a dip in temperature coming

Close to 30 degrees on Friday - Ukrainian snow for 90+ hours will drop the temperature 20 degrees, says Tsatrafyllias

Newsroom March 15 08:07

The forecasters are insisting that the weekend’s dust and summer temperatures will be followed by a spectacular drop and very wintry weather. The highest temperatures will be recorded on Saturday in northern Crete, where they will reach 30 degrees, possibly very locally a little more. In the middle of the new week winter will return with very low temperatures. Then spring temperatures will return.

According to meteorologist George Tsatraphyllia, bitter cold is coming with spring taking a pause. “Ukrainian snow for 90+ hours will drop the temperature 20 degrees…” he writes of the changing weather in the coming days.

He says that on Wednesday, the temperature in Athens will drop to 8 degrees, while snow will fall in the mountains and at lower altitudes.

The meteorologist of OPEN, Klearhos Marousakis, spoke of an “extreme change” in the weather in the middle of next week, describing that from high temperatures for the season and African dust, we will go to bitter cold and even snow in areas with low altitudes.

“That is, in a short period of time, from the deep spring and African dust, we will go to bitter cold, even snow at low altitudes in the middle of next week,” Marousakis said.

As he explained, “African dust will persist until Sunday, as a new episode is heading to our country from today, but mainly Saturday and Sunday, accompanied by warm air masses, which means that the atmosphere will also be quite demoralizing. But from Monday, the African dust is clearing away, the atmosphere is clearing and we will be heading into a winter flare, a fast period of very wintry weather.”

According to Marousakis, “the weather change will last 3 to 4 days. It will start on Wednesday and by the weekend this extreme change will complete its action.”

The temperature was close to 30 degrees on Friday

At the same time, particularly high temperatures were recorded across the country on Friday (3/14).

The highest maximum temperature was recorded at the weather station in Livadia and was equal to 28.7˚C, while the average maximum temperature across the country was 7.4˚C above the normal for the season (average value 2010-2019).
