Weather in Kolydas: The African dust is gradually receding – The EMY forecast for the next few days

On Monday it is expected to rain in northern Greece while from noon onwards the temperature is expected to drop

The strong Saharan dust transport phenomenon that has “choked” many areas of Greece is expected to show signs of abatement from Monday.

According to the forecast data released today by Thodoris Kolydas, “from tomorrow the dust wave will gradually move further east. The first picture shows the actual image of the suspended dust, depicted in pink and located in large concentrations in the west and south, while the other picture shows the forecast data from #Copernicus.”

Today, Sunday 16/03 will be the last day with a strong Saharan dust transport towards Greece, with the highest concentrations mainly in the western, central and southern parts, as estimated by the DUST/METEO dust concentration forecast model of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr.

As of Monday morning 17/03 dust concentrations are gradually decreasing.

Sunday 16-03-2025

Thin clouds in the northwest and in Macedonia.

In the afternoon hours, there will be occasional localized rain and isolated thunderstorms.

Visibility in the morning hours will be locally limited.

African dust is favoured across the country. From the afternoon, however, it will be confined to the southeast.

Winds will blow from southern directions 4 to 6 and in the Aegean Sea locally 7 Beaufort, gradually from the noon hours and from the west will turn to west northwestern 4 to 6 Beaufort.

The temperature, despite a slight drop in the west and north, will remain high for the season. It will reach 23 to 24 degrees Celsius in the west and north, 25 to 26 degrees in the rest of the country and 28 to 30 degrees Celsius in northern Crete.

Monday 17-03-2025

Scattered clouds in the west and north, where there will be occasional local showers. The phenomena will intensify from noon in the north and isolated thunderstorms will occur. Light snowfall will occur in the northern mountains.

Winds will blow west northwest 4 to 5 Beaufort, in the sea locally 6 and in the south 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. It will reach 17 to 19 degrees Celsius in the north, 16 to 18 degrees in the west, 18 to 20 degrees in the rest of the country and 21 to 23 degrees Celsius in Crete and the Dodecanese.

Aegean. The phenomena will intensify in the evening in some places in the eastern parts. Snowfall will occur in the central and northern mountains and from the evening in semi-mountainous areas.

Winds will blow from the north 5 to 6, in the sea 6 to 7 Beaufort and from noon will increase in the northern Aegean to 8 and possibly 9 Beaufort.

In the afternoon it will be more intense and may reach up to 9.5 and 9.9.
The temperature will drop significantly by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.
