Weather: The cold retreats starting today, the forecast for March 25th is “locked”

Today, the weather will improve with temperatures rising and sunshine expected throughout the country. Over the weekend, the winds will shift to southerlies, bringing a warmer air mass from the coasts of North Africa, raising temperatures even further.

According to the director of the Hellenic Meteorological Service (EMY), Theodoros Kolydas, “the cold will retreat from Friday, and as the winds shift to southerlies over the weekend, both minimum and maximum temperatures will rise. The weather will be mild on March 25th, but there will be local rains in the west, central, and northern regions.”

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis also spoke about the weather for March 25th, emphasizing that “On March 25th, excellent weather conditions will prevail, and the parades will take place under very favorable temperatures.”

He mentioned that a warmer air mass is gradually arriving from the North African coast, which will also bring African dust. It will result in some cloudiness over the next days, which might bring some rain on Sunday, mainly in Northern Greece, typically in the form of muddy rain. The wind will shift to southerlies, and we will then experience clear spring weather conditions with high temperatures, reaching around 23 to 26 degrees Celsius.

Close to -12 °C was the minimum temperature on Thursday morning, March 20, 2025 The temperature reached close to -12 °C on the morning of Thursday, March 20th. According to the network of automated meteorological stations of meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens, the minimum temperature was recorded in Mavrolithari, Fokida (-11.7 °C), followed by Ochyro Nevrokopiou (-8.6 °C), Elefthero Grevenon (-8.3 °C), and Kozianni Valley (-8.3 °C).

The following table presents the 8 stations of the network that recorded the lowest temperatures on Thursday morning, March 20th.

Today’s Weather Local cloudiness is expected in the Cyclades and Crete. In the rest of the country, there will be sunshine, and only in the afternoon and midday will some local cloudiness develop in mountainous areas of the mainland. Visibility in the mainland will be locally limited until morning.

The temperature in Western Macedonia will range from -3 to 11 °C, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 0 to 15, in Thessaly from 1 to 17, in Epirus from 1 to 17, in Sterea and the Peloponnese from 2 to 17, in the Ionian Islands from 3 to 16, in the Northern and Eastern Aegean Islands from 3 to 14, in the Cyclades from 7 to 14, in the Dodecanese from 8 to 15, and in Crete from 6 to 17 °C.

The winds in the Aegean will blow from northern directions at 3 to 5 Beaufort. The exception is the Dodecanese and the Eastern Cyclades, where the northern winds will blow at 4 to 6 Beaufort. In the Ionian, winds will blow from northwestern directions at 2 to 4 Beaufort.

In Attica, sunny weather is expected. Winds will blow from northern directions at up to 3 Beaufort. The temperature in central Athens will range from 7 to 17 °C.

In Thessaloniki, sunny weather is expected. Winds will blow from variable directions at up to 2 Beaufort. Visibility will be locally limited until morning. The temperature in central Thessaloniki will range from 6 to 15 °C.

Saturday’s Weather (22/03) In the west, central, and northern regions, there will be sparse clouds, locally denser. In the rest of the areas, the weather will generally be clear. Visibility will be locally limited in the west in the morning.

Winds will blow in the eastern Aegean from north-northwest at 3 to 5 Beaufort, in the other regions initially variable at 2 to 4 Beaufort and from the afternoon southerly at the same intensity.

The temperature will rise slightly, mainly in the west. It will reach 17 to 18 °C in the west, 16 to 17 °C in the rest of the regions, and locally 18 °C in southern Crete and the Dodecanese.

Sunday’s Weather (23/03) In the west, central, and northern regions, there will be intermittent increased cloudiness with local rain, mainly in the west and north. In the rest of the areas, the weather will be generally clear with sparse clouds that will become denser in the afternoon.

Winds will blow from southerly directions at 3 to 5 Beaufort, gradually reaching locally 6 Beaufort in the seas, and in the Ionian, 7 Beaufort by the afternoon.

The temperature will rise slightly.

Monday’s Weather (24/03) There will be intermittent increased cloudiness across the country. Local rains are expected in the west, central, and northern regions. The transport of African dust to the west is favored.

Winds will blow from southerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, in the Aegean locally 7 Beaufort, and in the Ionian up to 8 Beaufort.

The temperature will rise further and reach 19 to 20 °C in most areas.
