Imamoglu’s lawyers to appeal against his pre-trial detention

Imamoglu detained over corruption case - CHP also to appeal

Newsroom March 23 01:26

The attorneys representing Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, against whom an arrest warrant for “corruption” was issued today, will appeal the decision, one of them told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“Of course, we will appeal the detention order,” said a lawyer for the mayor, who is the main opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Imamoglu was detained over the corruption case. Regarding the separate terrorism charge, the court did not decide on pre-trial detention but imposed restrictive measures on Imamoglu, according to Halk TV and a Haber networks, which likely means he will not be replaced by a government-appointed official.

CHP to appeal as well

Meanwhile, Turkey’s main opposition party will also appeal today’s court decision to detain Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu pending trial on corruption charges, the party leader said, adding the case is a politically motivated setup.

Speaking to reporters at the Istanbul court, Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel also stated that the Istanbul City Council would now elect a person to serve as acting mayor while awaiting a ruling on Imamoglu.
