Tensions in parliament: Konstantopoulou accuses MPs of killing Tempi victims, Lazaridis fires back

Floridis: Konstantopoulou doing everything to prevent the case from reaching court

Newsroom April 11 09:43

Tension escalated in the Greek Parliament during a debate on the findings of the preliminary inquiry report, with Zoi Konstantopoulou accusing New Democracy MPs of being responsible for the deaths of the 57 victims in the Tempi train tragedy. In response, Makarios Lazaridis insulted her, saying, “In the morning, you’re a mourner, but by night, you dance like a party animal at Zouganeli’s.” Konstantopoulou retaliated, accusing them of trampling on the memory of the victims.

The discussion became chaotic with personal attacks, including references to alleged letters sent by actor Spyros Bibilas. Konstantopoulou argued that those who voted for the report would face criminal responsibility, calling the session illegal. Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis defended the process, accusing the opposition of covering up the truth.

The debate was marked by procedural objections, with opposition parties like SYRIZA, KKE, and others walking out in protest against what they deemed unconstitutional proceedings. They called for a return to the preliminary inquiry for further investigation. Meanwhile, government representatives insisted the evidence was sufficient for a trial.

The session concluded with deep divisions, with some parties accusing the ruling party of attempting to whitewash the government’s responsibility, while others stood firm on the need for justice and accountability.
