Britain and northern European countries support Trump’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine

Zelenski open to "all forms of negotiations" with Russia

Newsroom May 9 02:29

Britain and northern European countries support US President Donald Trump‘s proposal for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Stere said today.

“We need an unconditional ceasefire, which should first and foremost be monitored and respected before we can move on to negotiations on the big issues in order to reach a lasting peace,” the Norwegian leader said on the occasion of a meeting of the ten JEF (Joint Expeditionary Force) member countries.

Those countries had separate phone talks yesterday, Thursday, evening with Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“This (the demand for a ceasefire) is acceptable and understandable, as is the need to put pressure on Russia to respect this ceasefire,” the Norwegian prime minister added.

“If it is not respected, sanctions could be imposed,” he continued.

Donald Trump yesterday, Thursday, called for an “unconditional 30-day ceasefire” in Ukraine, while Zelensky said he was open to “all forms of negotiations” with Russia.

Russia, like Ukraine, “must be held accountable” and “if the ceasefire is not respected, the US and its partners will impose other sanctions,” the US president also threatened on his social media outlet Social Truth.

“In this regard, this is a coordinated approach, which has today been adopted by the US, the Europeans and Ukraine,” the Norwegian prime minister also stressed.

The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) is led by Britain and includes the Nordic and Baltic states as well as the Netherlands.
