Personal number: Final stage approaching, everything you need to know

A meeting will be held today at 10 a.m. under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion, with the Ministers of Digital Governance and Citizen Protection. The topic is the integration of the Personal Number into the new police identity card

Newsroom May 26 08:58

The Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, has already clarified that those who have already issued an identity card do not need to replace it, as it will remain valid until its expiration date.

Regarding the new Personal Number, Mr. Papastergiou explained that “The personal number will consist of three alphanumeric digits plus the Tax Identification Number (AFM). By alphanumeric, we mean numbers and letters commonly used from both the Greek and Latin alphabets. The first two are selected, while the third is generated automatically.”

If the citizen does not choose the two alphanumeric digits within three months, the system will assign them automatically.

What is the Personal Number?

The issuance of the Personal Number will be a mandatory element for verifying the identity of individuals in their transactions with public sector agencies.

From now on, every citizen will have a unique 12-digit number, where the first 9 digits correspond to their AFM (tax number), and the remaining 3 will be added as a prefix, two of which are selected by the citizen.

It is issued and provided mandatorily to every natural person entitled to an AFM or AMKA (social security number).

The new number does not replace existing registries but functions as a basic identity for every transaction with the public sector.

Process via the myInfo platform

To obtain the Personal Number, one must log in to the myInfo.gov.gr platform, review their personal data and all existing numbers (AMKA, AFM, etc.), and confirm them. The citizen can correct any errors, such as misspelled names, before final confirmation.

After this step, they will be able to select two of the three additional digits completing the Personal Number, and the issuance of the number will proceed.

Next step: Integration of the Personal Number into the new identity card

The Personal Number will be integrated into the new digital identity card of the citizen, enhancing interoperability between services. Although existing registries (AFM, AMKA, etc.) are not abolished, the Personal Number plays a key role in modernizing the public sector.
