Weather: Heat and strong winds persist – High fire risk in 17 areas

Maximum temperature yesterday exceeded 37 °C - Maximum wind gust at 100 km/h

The high temperatures of the past few days have subsided, but heat is persisting in the interior of mainland Greece, according to Thodoris Kolydas, who in a post refers to the main characteristics of the weather until Sunday.

Also, winds will continue to blow strong with intensities reaching even 7 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea with weakening from Sunday afternoon, the former EMY director added.

It is worth noting that the meteorologist of Star in his post also refers to the risk of fire mainly for today as it is expected to be high in central and southern Evia, Attikovoitia, eastern and southern Peloponnese, the Cyclades, Crete and the eastern Aegean.

High fire danger today in seventeen areas

A high fire risk (risk category 3) is forecast today (Thursday) in some areas of the country, according to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr).

High fire risk (risk category 3) in:

– Attica and Kythera
– Argolida
– areas of Boeotia, Corinthia, Laconia, Euboea and Skyros
– Cyclades
– Mytilene, Chios, Psara, Samos, Ikaria
– Crete
– Karpathos, Kasos

Maximum temperature exceeded 37 °C on Wednesday – Maximum wind gusts of 100 km/h

The temperature on Wednesday 11/06/2025 remained high for the season, mainly in southern Greece, with maximum values exceeding 37 °C locally. The highest maximum temperature was recorded at the weather station in Elafonissi, Chania, and was equal to 37.4˚C.

At the same time, stronger northerly winds are blowing in the Aegean and the eastern mainland with the maximum wind gust recorded at the meteorological station in Paximada Karystos at 103 km/h.

Today’s weather

Generally clear weather is expected with local showers and thunderstorms in the midday and afternoon hours in the continental mountainous areas.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 12 to 29-30 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 14 to 35 degrees Celsius, in Thessaly from 15 to 35 degrees Celsius, in Epirus from 14 to 33-34 degrees Celsius, in the rest of the mainland from 14 to 34-36 degrees Celsius, in the Ionian Islands from 16 to 32-34 degrees Celsius, in the Aegean islands and in Crete from 17 to 34-36 degrees Celsius.

The winds in the Aegean will blow from general northern directions with intensities up to 5-6 Beaufort. In the Ionian Sea the winds will be generally northwest, with intensities up to 3-4 Beaufort.

In Attica, clear weather is expected. The winds will blow from northerly directions with intensities up to 3-4 and in the east of the prefecture locally up to 5 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 24 to 34-35 degrees Celsius.

In Thessaloniki, generally clear weather is expected. Winds will blow from various directions with intensities of 2-3 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 24 to 34 degrees Celsius.

The weather on Friday, June 13

Generally clear weather with occasional clouds and local rain in the western, central and northern mainland in the afternoon hours, when isolated thunderstorms will occur in the mountains of Epirus, western Sterea and western Peloponnese.

Winds will blow from the north in the west 3 to 5 Beaufort, in the east 5 to 6 Beaufort and in the Aegean Sea locally 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop slightly, mainly in the north. It will reach 31 to 34 degrees Celsius in the Ionian Sea and most of the mainland areas and 35 degrees Celsius locally on the mainland, and 29 to 31 degrees Celsius on the Aegean islands and 34 degrees Celsius locally in southern Crete and the southeastern Aegean.

The weather on Saturday, June 14

Almost clear weather with a few clouds and local rain in the mainland, mainly in the west, in the midday – afternoon hours.

Winds will blow from the north, in the west 3 to 4, in the east 5 to 6 and in the Aegean Sea locally 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop slightly further in the east.

Generally clear weather with a few clouds that will increase in the midday – afternoon hours in some places on the mainland and in the north and west there will be local rain showers.

Winds in the west will be variable up to 4 Beaufort. In the east, winds will blow from northern directions 4 to 6 and in the southeastern Aegean Sea 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will drop further across the country.
