Investigating Azeri connection in Crete and Cyprus – Looking for the recipient of the photos

The accused had taken more than 5,000 photographs of the entrance and exit of the port of Souda

A link between the two Azeri men arrested in Cyprus and Crete is being investigated by National Intelligence Service in order to establish whether the two men are linked and whether the order for their “services” was given by the same cell.

The former was arrested last Saturday in Cyprus while the latter was arrested yesterday (23/6) in Souda. Regarding their activities, the Azeri arrested in Cyprus is alleged to be an agent of Iran’s intelligence services and was acting as a “lone wolf”, monitoring for some time the activity at the British base at Akrotiri, where RAF aircraft are stationed.

As for the second, he is alleged to have rented a hotel in close proximity to the airbase and carried out photography of the base at Souda.

The 26-year-old arrived in Chania on June 18 and at the hotel where he was staying asked for a view of Souda harbour. In fact, he had booked the room for a month. During the time he stayed there, he only came out of his room to get essentials.

It was discovered after his arrest that the accused had taken more than 5,000 photographs of the entrance and exit of Souda port from his room.

He was sending these photos via a special encryption software with authorities conducting an investigation to determine who the recipient was.

Well-informed sources told protothema.gr that police officers are attempting to trace digital traces of these dispatches in order to lead them to the recipient of the messages and reveal the full action of the accused.
