Greece elected to the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission

Widely accepted and in a very high position - Turkey submitted to the same UNESCO body its own Marine Spatial Planning Charter, which includes claims against Greece

Newsroom July 2 08:45

Greece was elected today, Wednesday (2/7), to the Executive Board of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO for the period 2025-2027.

The election was widely accepted and highly prestigious.

It should be recalled that Turkey submitted two weeks ago its own Marine Spatial Planning Charter to the same Commission, where all the claims against Greece are reflected.

The Foreign Ministry stressed in a statement that the election “is a clear international recognition of Greece’s role and power in the international maritime arena, fully respecting the International Law of the Sea, as reflected in the 1982 UN Convention of the same name (UNCLOS).”

The Intergovernmental Commission has as its main mission the promotion of international cooperation in marine science and the improvement of the management of oceans, coasts and marine resources, with a special interest in the protection of marine ecosystems and biodiversity to effectively address climate change.

Greece, as the ministry continues, “as a member of the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, is committed to actively participate in its work and to contribute substantially, with high expertise, to the actions of the IOC for the benefit of the protection of the marine environment and in particular the oceans, which are a vital common good of humanity”.
