Mourning in world football as Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident early Thursday morning in the province of Zamora, Spain.

The Liverpool and Portugal national team player was in the same car with his 26-year-old brother, a player for Penafiel, when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle went off course and caught fire, with both brothers losing their lives.

Spain’s Civil Protection Agency confirmed to the BBC that Jota and his brother, André Silva, had died.

In the same statement, Spanish authorities revealed the first information about the cause of the accident that claimed the life of the Portuguese international footballer for Liverpool.

“The information we have so far is that the car, a Lamborghini, was involved in a traffic accident and went off the road due to a flat tire while overtaking. The accident occurred at 00:30 [Portuguese time], in the municipality of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora. The car caught fire and the two occupants lost their lives,” they said.
