Weather: The winds are weakening from today, the “thermal dome” brings a four-day heatwave

The National Weather Service warns with an emergency bulletin about the deterioration of the weather that will start from Sunday - The temperature reached 39 degrees yesterday

Newsroom July 5 08:51

The next few days will roll by with temperature rising and winds particularly limited over the weekend. However, the thermal dome that in the past few days made western and central Europe boil will cover Greece from Sunday, bringing a four-day wave of heat wave with the mercury topping the 40s.

Yesterday, the National Weather Service issued an emergency weather forecast for very high temperatures in our country from Sunday (06-07-25) to Wednesday (09-07-25).

The temperature rise will start in the west and Macedonia on Saturday (05-07-25) and in the rest of Greece on Sunday (06-07-25).

The highest values (maximum values above 40 degrees) will be recorded from Monday (07-07-25) in the interior of mainland Greece and mainly in the west, central and north.

It should be noted that:

A. In the coastal areas of the mainland the maximum temperature will be 2 to 4 degrees lower than the temperature in the interior of mainland Greece.

Β. The relative humidity will be low (indicatively 20% to 30% during the midday hours in the interior of the mainland).

C. Minimum temperatures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in urban centres will remain high and will be around 26 to 28 degrees Celsius.

In more detail:

1. Maximum values will reach:

a) in Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus and western Sterea 38-39 degrees Celsius and possibly 40 degrees Celsius locally.

b) in eastern Central Greece and the Peloponnese 37 to 39 degrees Celsius.

c) in the Ionian islands 35 to 36 degrees Celsius.

2. On Monday (07-07-25) very high temperatures will be recorded on the Ionian islands and all the mainland, while the temperature will also rise in the eastern islands. Maximum values will reach:

a) in mainland Greece 39 to 40 and in some places 41 degrees Celsius.

b) in the Ionian islands, the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese islands 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.

3. On Tuesday (08-07-25) and Wednesday (09-07-25) a slight drop in high temperatures is expected in the Ionian and western mainland and a slight rise (by about 1 to 2 degrees) in the eastern mainland and the Aegean. It is estimated that the maximum values will reach 41 to 42 degrees Celsius in some places on the mainland.

Theodoros Kolydas regarding the Emergency Weather Bulletin issued by the National Weather Service (EMF), in a post points out the difference in temperatures between continental areas and those affected by the sea breezes.

“However, the correct temperature range is not given as it states “In the coastal areas of the mainland, the maximum temperature will be 2 to 4 degrees lower than the temperature in the interior of mainland Greece” Below we will document why the range should be set higher ( 4 to 6 degrees) and not what is stated in the emergency bulletin“.

For his part, Giorgos Tsatrafyllias in a Facebook post refers to the meteorological phenomenon “heat dome” or thermal dome that is coming to our country

The meteorologist of Alpha refers to the unusual heat that has been hitting western and central Europe with record temperatures in recent days and will affect our country in the coming days, stressing that the rise in temperature will begin at the weekend (36-38 degrees) after the winds will weaken, while the three-day Monday-Wednesday our country will be in a heat wave.

“The mercury is expected to exceed 41-42 degrees in central Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Boeotia, Fthiotida , Attica and the Peloponnese. From Wednesday afternoon the temperature will drop violently (even 10 degrees) by a disturbance which will strengthen the north winds and may bring bursts in northern Greece. Then until Sunday -16/7- the heat will be normal for the season, “he notes in his post and draws attention to the next few days for the increased risk of fires, due to drying of vegetation and strengthening winds, the deterioration of health: heat exhaustion, heat stroke, increased mortality, but also the pressure on energy networks (due to increased use of air conditioners).

The temperature reached 38-39 °C on Friday 04/07/2025
