Significant rise in declared overtime in May: Tourism sector records 1055% increase

"We are particularly satisfied with the results of the implementation of the Digital Labour Card" said Labour Minister Niki Kerameos

Newsroom July 8 09:50

The effectiveness of the Digital Job Card measure is confirmed by data from the Ergani Information System for May 2025, as the impressive increase in declared overtime continues.

Significant, once again, are the figures recorded by the Tourism sector, which recorded a 1055% increase every month for May 2025 compared to May 2024.

This is the first time Tourism has become the industry with the most recorded overtime, after Manufacturing. Until April 2025, Tourism was behind Manufacturing, Retail Trade and Food Services.

Particularly significant is the increase in the other employment sectors included in the Digital Job Card between 7/2024 and 3/2025. Compared to May 2024, May 2025 saw a 129% increase in reported overtime in food service, a 92% increase in retail, and an 85% increase in manufacturing. Overall, for May 2025, the ERGANI Information System records a 92% increase in overtime in all sectors implementing the Digital Job Card.

The comparative figures for the first five months of 2024 versus the first five months of 2025 are similar. For that period, there is an increase in reported overtime of 903% in tourism, 104% in retail, 83% in food service, and 79% in manufacturing.

“We are particularly pleased with the results of the implementation of the Digital Job Card. The steady increase in reported overtime recorded demonstrates most eloquently the necessity and effectiveness of the measure,” said Minister of Labour and Social Security Niki Kerameos, adding that “the Digital Labour Card is a valuable tool for further improving working conditions, for the protection of workers and businesses. It records the actual working hours, ensuring that employees are paid accordingly, while safeguarding healthy businesses from unfair competition.”
