Trump on tariffs: We are very close to an agreement with India, the EU may follow

The European Union was tough, but now they are very good, the agreement we will make with them will be very different from the one we had in the previous years, he said - It is too early to talk about Canada, he added

Newsroom July 17 11:40

The United States is very close to signing a trade deal with India and may reach a similar agreement with the European Union, Donald Trump said in a radio interview with Real America’s Voice. Asked about the case of Canada, Trump said that “it’s still too early to talk about that.”

The US president stressed that his administration is negotiating with trading partners to achieve more favorable terms for the United States and reduce the trade deficit. The talks are expected to conclude by August 1, when tariffs on most U.S. imports could be raised again.

“We are very close with India … and we could come to an agreement with the EU,” Trump said in response to a question about the trade deals under way.

Trump’s comments came as EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefchowitz travelled to Washington on Wednesday to discuss tariffs, while an Indian delegation arrived in Washington on Monday for new rounds of talks.

“The European Union was tough, but now it is very good. They want to agree, and it’s going to be very different from the one we’ve had for many years,” Trump added.

Asked about the prospects of a trade deal with Canada, which, like the EU, is preparing countermeasures in case negotiations fail, Trump said: “It’s too early to talk about that.”

It’s too early to talk about that yet.
In addition, he said he was considering introducing a general tariff of 10% or 15% for smaller countries.
