Explosion at a factory in the Patras Industrial Zone, one injured

In debunking a series of fake news reports related to the fires that firefighting forces were tackling, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, spoke during a briefing on the wildfires.

Mr. Kefalogiannis referred to five news items that had circulated and emphasized that this happened “while our firefighters were waging a titanic battle to protect lives, property, and the natural environment.”

Specifically, the minister noted:

  • “There are no deaths in Achaia, as was reported in a live broadcast by a TV station.
  • The industrial area of Patras was not destroyed. There was damage to an abandoned factory and to a company’s storage facility.
  • The Karamanadaneo Pediatric Hospital did not catch fire.
  • 30 people were not trapped in the Filippiada area.
  • And, acknowledging how shocking it is to see fire from your home, NO, the fire did not enter the urban area of Patras.”
