“You should know that the chick is being groomed…”: Cretan mafia members’ exchange after being tipped off about police operations

The members of the Cretan mafia when they were informed by their police officer - accomplice, who was called "chick" or "girl", changed their behavior and started to take measures for their protection - The coded dialogue about the possible danger

Newsroom September 4 08:18

The critical role of a police officer included among the defendants in the high-profile Cretan mafia case is outlined in the documentary. The policeman is accused of giving information to members of the criminal organisation about police movements.

In early August, and while arrests of regional members and mainly drug traffickers have already begun, members of the gang have become alarmed and have turned to the police officer to gain insight into police movements. When this happens, gang members take steps to protect themselves and at the same time the one who has met with the policeman says to another to whom he asks to meet in person the phrase “You should realize that the chick is grooming…”, intending to ring a warning bell. After all, they had been calling their police accomplice “Chick” or “Girl” as a code word.

The gang member met with the police officer, neither of them realizing that they were under surveillance. According to the filing, after the meeting, the gang members “significantly modified their daily routines”. They stopped making numerous phone calls and began meeting in person, apparently fearing that the phones were under surveillance, took steps to go unnoticed, changed “intermediaries.”

After meeting with the police officer, the gang member calls another accomplice and among other things tells him on the phone: “Urgent…I want to tell you something, I want to tell you two things, one is okay, normal, the other is not…”

In the conversation that they agree to meet in person and is recorded, the two defendants, informed by their co-defendant police officer, say:

Person 1: “Hey, I’m with the company, and I’m sitting around eating and drinking.”
Person 2: “Ah!”
Person 1: “Only… tomorrow when we get together, I’ll tell you.”
Person 2: Okay
Person 1: “But you should know that the chick is getting knocked u,p and they said who knocked her up.”
Person 2: “Mm, okay, see you in the morning in person, bye.”
Person 1: “11:30 a.m. I’ll call you back.”
