Tsipras’s lonely march to grassroots: Renewal and the new generation are the goals

Freed from his parliamentary obligations, the former Prime Minister plans direct contact with citizens, investing in the new generation and in people with fresh ideas

Newsroom October 8 07:43

Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, relieved in the last twenty-four hours of his parliamentary and party obligations, will attempt to recapture the thread of the social majority very soon, following his resignation from his position as a SYRIZA Piraeus MP.

Seeking the pulse of society, but also with a strong desire to listen to citizens in their daily lives, Alexis Tsipras will systematically address society in the next period of time and above all alone.

His associates, moreover, point out that the former Prime Minister did not wink at anyone, did not make any behind-the-scenes arrangements with anyone, but neither did he invite anyone to make any move, choosing the lonely way. On the contrary, Tsipras was clear in his statement and left no room for misinterpretation, announcing that he would be the one to go and speak and listen to the citizens. Therefore, those who write such scenarios do not know Alexis Tsipras, his interlocutors observe, given that the political relationship that he himself has built with a large part of Greek society over the past few years is the “compass” of his political path.

At the same time, however, throughout Alexis Tsipras’s political career, renewal has been his main choice, bringing to the fore unheralded individuals and entire generations, even for very demanding political roles, as in the case of Gavriil Sakellaridis for the municipality of Athens. However, it is the former Prime Minister’s deep conviction that new faces deserve opportunities, which he gives to people with dynamic positions who can infuse society with the new.

A wind of renewal

Besides, what is important for Alexis Tsipras is to try to create the new and the subversive through the persons. Already, a brief review of the persons who have emerged during his long political career, both at the party and government levels, proves this as a personal attitude and it is something that does not change. After all, the former Prime Minister has enhanced his social feedback from the younger generation to a great extent in recent times, spending a lot of time both at Harvard University and with his dense contacts with young people and scientists in the country through his institute.

It was, moreover, no coincidence that in his last public intervention before resigning, he “showed” the younger generation, opting for a joint outing with a group of Greek students at the University of Sorbonne. “Their interest in all that is happening in Greece was lively. About political life, about the economy, about corruption and undue corruption, about the overall outlook of the country.”

Analysis of Tsipras’ speech with AI tools: the “Idealized Approach” of populism, the surprising similarity with Trump

With clear eyes and genuine concern for the future of our country, which is their tomorrow,” Tsipras commented meaningfully late last week, to conclude that “in the end, it was probably me who solved questions and gained more from this meeting. À bientôt, les enfants!” This concluding greeting hid several meanings, as Alexis Tsipras has already “stepped aside” once by resigning from the SYRIZA Presidency in favour of the younger generation, now giving even more space to fresh faces.

Alongside the new generation, however, at Alexis Tsipras’ “headquarters” on Amalias Avenue, the people who surround him form his most stable core, as his staff team includes. Tsipras’ office, Yanna Peppe, founding member of the Institute, the former Ministers George Houliarakis and Dimitris Liakos, the former Deputy Secretary of the SYRIZA PA, George Vassiliadis and the Head of Press Affairs, Andreas Bousios, while the new scientific committee will be announced in a matter of days.

Besides, as “out of context” as Alexis Tsipras‘ move to leave his parliamentary seat and its privileges was, his moves in the near future are expected to be just as “out of context”, and it seems that they will not be long in coming.
