Greek man who plunged Sweden into gang chaos arrested in Mexico – Who is Michael Tenezos from Pistiána, Arta

The 27-year-old, known by the alias “Greken” (The Greek), is a leading figure in the criminal gang Dalen, linked to bombings, murders, kidnappings, and extortion

Michael Tenezos, a 27-year-old Greek known to Swedish authorities by the nickname “Greken” (The Greek), was arrested in Mexico following a Europol-led operation. His story reads like the script of a crime thriller.

Born in Stockholm to Greek immigrant parents, the young man who once dreamed of a career in figure skating eventually became considered one of Sweden’s most dangerous individuals.

Authorities describe him as a senior member of the criminal organization Dalen, a splinter group from the notorious Foxtrot gang led by Rawa Majid, also known as the “Kurdish Fox.”

The war between the two groups turned Stockholm into a battleground, dragging one of Europe’s most peaceful capitals into gang violence. Within a single year, over 60 people were killed in shootings and bomb attacks, with the death toll continuing to rise the following year.

The 25-year-old from Pistiána, Arta turned Stockholm into Gotham City

Explosions, murders, kidnappings, and blackmail became daily occurrences — all in a country once considered a model of social prosperity and safety. Tenezos’s gang controlled areas in southern Stockholm, such as Enskededalen and Bagarmossen, while their Foxtrot rivals dominated the north. The conflict had grown beyond financial motives and had become a personal vendetta, with each side aiming to eliminate the other completely.

Those who knew young Michael during his teenage years describe him as an athlete with discipline, talent, and ambition. He had seriously pursued ice hockey, and coaches described him as a highly energetic and determined kid with potential.

But no one could have imagined that just a few years later, he would become central to the most violent criminal conflict Sweden has ever seen. According to authorities, he began associating with delinquent youths and gradually entered organized crime, building trafficking networks for weapons and drugs, lured by easy money. Surveillance of his communications revealed a network operating with strict discipline, deeply embedded in many Stockholm neighborhoods.

Roots in Arta, Greece

Michael Tenezos is originally from Pistiána, a small mountainous village in the Arta region with around 200 residents. The surname “Tenezos” still exists in the area, as several family members had emigrated to Sweden in the 1970s in search of a better life.

In a previous interview with Proto Thema, 72-year-old Giorgos Tenezos, a distant relative, said:

“His grandfather left here about fifty years ago. He built his life in Sweden, and we lost contact. Michael’s parents last visited the village around fifteen years ago, when he was just a little boy. Since then, we haven’t heard from them.”
He added that no one in the village could have imagined that the boy who once played in the yards with other kids would become a name that terrifies Sweden:
“We learned about it all from the TV. No one could believe it. He was just a normal kid.”
