Inauguration of the new “Athina Ioann. Martino” University Oncology Center at Attikon University Hospital

The new University Oncology Center “Athina Ioann. Martino,” part of the 2nd Propaedeutic Internal Medicine Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), was officially inaugurated at Attikon University Hospital

Newsroom October 15 08:03

The center was built thanks to the generous donation of Athanasios and Marina Martino, who fully funded the construction through the non-profit cultural and public-benefit organization AIGEAS.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis, Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidaki, Deputy Minister of Education Nikolaos Papaioannou, NKUA Rector Gerasimos Siasos, and other officials, professors, doctors, and nurses, highlighting the center’s importance for public health and university medicine in Greece.

The “Athina – Ioann. Martino” Oncology Center aims to become a model of excellence in cancer care, clinical research, and teaching. It provides comprehensive patient care, promotes innovative clinical studies, and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among doctors, researchers, and students of NKUA.

The oncology unit is the first in a public hospital to occupy a dedicated building, covering 1,097 square meters. It is expected to serve over 20,000 patients annually, 41% more than in 2019, making Attikon a state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer center.

The center supports patients from diagnosis to recovery, offering personalized care tailored to each tumor type. It is in the process of obtaining European certification as a Comprehensive Cancer Center for lung cancer.

The facility was built to meet modern international standards, providing advanced infrastructure, appropriate treatment spaces, and dedicated areas for medical and nursing staff.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis praised the Martinos family for their contribution and highlighted the center’s role in providing high-quality, dignified cancer treatment. He also emphasized the center’s role in advancing research and precision medicine, tailoring treatments to each patient’s genetic profile.

Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis and donor Athanasios Martinos expressed their gratitude to all collaborators, including NKUA administration, hospital staff, and construction teams, for their efforts in making the center a reality.
