Municipality of Zirou responds to major environmental pollution from animal waste in Preveza

Police have made arrests in connection with the case

Newsroom October 29 06:55

A serious case of environmental pollution has been uncovered in the region of Preveza, where several individuals allegedly buried tons of animal waste in the yard of a private company.

Officers from the Environmental Protection Department of the Thessaloniki Police Directorate for Crime Investigation arrested three suspects and filed charges against 12 others.
According to police sources, a 28-year-old man unloaded eight truckloads of animal by-products in the courtyard of a company owned by a 40-year-old man.

Investigations revealed that the waste originated from a business operated by two Greek nationals, aged 64 and 28, located on an island within Greek territory.

Police also discovered that the suspects had attempted to conceal the dumping site by using machinery, metal barriers, and two trucks to block access.

At the scene, authorities found piles of at least 200 tons of mixed animal by-products — including packaged and processed animal-derived food waste in decomposition — combined with construction debris and food packaging materials.

Statement from the Municipality of Ziros

In an official statement regarding the transfer and burial of waste near Kalogiou Bridge, the Municipality of Ziros said:

“The Municipality of Ziros was informed unexpectedly about the transfer and illegal disposal of waste from a destroyed facility in Corfu to a private area near Kalogiou Bridge.
We state in the strongest possible terms that the Municipality of Ziros had no involvement or prior knowledge in the decision or its execution.

According to the official statement of the Hellenic Police, the case has been solved, arrests have been made, and a case file has been opened for environmental pollution.

On-site inspections have already been carried out by the Northern Greece Environmental Inspectorate and the Regional Unit of Preveza, which are the competent authorities for assessing the situation.

However, this issue extends beyond legal responsibility. The strong odor now recorded in the area has caused serious concern among residents.

We call on the competent authorities to immediately remove and safely manage the waste to protect public health and the environment.

The Municipality of Ziros demands clear answers on who decided to transfer the waste to Filippiada and who executed this decision, especially given its proximity to the Louros River, an ecosystem of exceptional environmental significance.

The municipality will, in cooperation with legal advisors, pursue all available legal avenues to safeguard the health and rights of the local community.
