Netherlands: Head-to-head battle between Jetten and Wilders in the parliamentary elections

The pro-European D66 and PVV are so far tied with 26 seats each

Newsroom October 30 07:01

The pro-European centrist party D66, led by Rob Jetten, and the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) of Geert Wilders are locked in a neck-and-neck race for the top spot in the Dutch parliamentary elections, with both securing 26 of the 150 seats in parliament after nearly 95% of the votes have been counted.

The centre-right liberal VVD is projected to win 22 seats, Frans Timmermans’ left-wing Green–Labour alliance (GroenLinks–PvdA) 20 seats, and the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) 18 seats.

Wilders’ party is set to lose 11 seats compared to its strong performance in the 2023 elections. Regardless of the final result, Wilders will not become prime minister, as the other major parties have ruled out forming a coalition with him.

Following a dispute over immigration, Wilders withdrew the PVV from a fragile four-party governing coalition, triggering early elections.
