Storm strike in Attica: More than 1,000 lightning strikes and flashes in less than 2 hours

The emergency weather deterioration bulletin is in force due to the heavy rains and thunderstorms hitting the country

Newsroom November 10 01:57

A strong thunderstorm hit the Attica basin at around 11 o’clock on Monday morning, without however causing significant problems on the roads of the capital.

The sky over Athens darkened and for about half an hour a significant amount of rain fell, worsening the already increased traffic chaos on the roads.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias had warned earlier today about extremely intense electrical activity in the Attica region.

During the storm, according to recordings from the National Observatory of Athens, more than 1,000 lightning strikes and flashes were recorded in a time period of less than two hours.

At this time drivers will encounter traffic congestion on the northbound direction of Kifisos, from Lenorman up to Nea Filadelfia, on Schistou Avenue and also on the southbound direction of Kifisias Avenue, from the “Ring” up to the area of Chalandri.

According to official information from the Attica Traffic Police, the most significant problems from the storm were observed in the greater Piraeus area, especially on Tzavella and Deligianni Street.

The heavy rainfall caused water accumulation on roads, resulting in traffic problems.
