Work crews from the Epirus Region are focusing on at least six dangerous spots in Tzoumerka to prevent further destruction. A major problem in Agnanta due to a broken retaining wall, with earth flooding neighborhoods and houses being threatened. The Governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kachrimanis, stated that geologists are in the area to prevent new disasters. Efforts by crews of the Epirus Region are focused on at least six dangerous points in Tzoumerka to avoid even greater damage and prevent the risk to lives. The biggest problem is in Agnanta, where a large retaining wall has broken, resulting in massive amounts of earth and debris flooding neighborhoods, roads being destroyed, and houses being directly threatened.

Governor Alexandros Kachrimanis told protothema.gr that crews have “cut off” the water flow towards the villages of Tzoumerka, while expert geologists are already in the area aiming to do whatever is needed to prevent further disasters. It should be noted that since last Friday, heavy torrential rains have been falling in the Tzoumerka and Ioannina area.

In a photo posted on Facebook by the Governor, a part of the land that collapsed right next to houses is visible.

According to apohxos.gr, residents and local authorities watch with anxiety as ground instability may cause further collapses.

Governor Kachrimanis noted that infrastructure in the Tzoumerka area has already been severely hit and the destruction is huge. Crews are working nonstop to clear roads and create temporary routes to keep the area functional, especially since it is a popular Christmas destination.

According to epiruspost.gr, a new inter-ministerial meeting will take place Friday afternoon to address the extensive damages in Epirus, aiming to assess the situation and the scale of government aid needed.
