Farmers block PATHE highway at Malgara – Tensions with drivers, see where other blockades are

The Athens-Thessaloniki national highway in Nikaia, Larissa, and the E65 remain closed – Vehicles trapped have been cleared, traffic is being rerouted at exits

Newsroom December 1 12:59

The farmers’ protests are in full swing for the second consecutive day today.

Since yesterday, the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway has remained closed at Nikaia, Larissa. The E65 motorway is also blocked by tractors from farmers in Karditsa, which have been positioned along the road since yesterday.

At the same time, new blockades are being set up in other regions of Greece. From the morning, farmers from Malgara and surrounding areas gathered with their tractors at the national highway junction, where a police barricade was set up to prevent entry onto the road network.

Farmers: Closed the Lane to Thessaloniki

Despite the police cordon, a group of farmers moved through fields, reached the roadway, and managed to get to the Malgara tolls on the Athens-bound lane. There, they closed the tolls, halting traffic, while the main body of tractors remains gathered at the Malgara junction without managing to get onto the highway.

Farmers: Closed the Lane to Thessaloniki

Meanwhile, while vehicle traffic was ongoing, the farmers also blocked the lane toward Thessaloniki. Cars that could not pass became trapped, causing tensions between drivers and farmers. In one incident, a driver hit a tractor with his bumper, followed by a verbal altercation.

Eventually, one lane was cleared and all trapped vehicles were able to leave. Now, at the toll area, only farmers and police remain. Traffic police are rerouting vehicles at the exits.
