Some parts of the country will experience stable weather on Monday, with similar conditions expected throughout the week leading up to Christmas.
Monday’s Forecast (22/12):
Local rain showers are anticipated in the central and southern Ionian Islands, Central Greece, Sporades, Evia, Magnesia, northern Peloponnese, southeastern Cyclades, and Crete. Elsewhere, expect mostly cloudy skies.
In northern and southern Crete, and southeastern Greece, the weather will be partly cloudy. Attica will see some local rain, with temperatures ranging from 10 to 17°C. Thessaloniki will enjoy long sunny spells with a few clouds, and temperatures between 5 and 14°C.
Local showers are also forecast for the eastern regions and the Ionian Islands. Isolated thunderstorms may occur in Crete, the Dodecanese, and possibly in the southern Ionian and southern Cyclades.
Winds will generally blow from the west, east-southeast, and in the east from the north-northeast at 3 to 5 Beaufort, reaching up to 6 Beaufort at sea.
Morning visibility may be reduced in some continental areas due to localized fog, particularly in western mainland Greece and Thessaly.
Temperatures will remain stable, reaching around 14°C in the north, 16-17°C elsewhere, and up to 18°C in the southern islands.
Marousakis Warns: Severe Weather Expected on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
A low-pressure system over the central Mediterranean is forecast to bring significant weather deterioration to Greece from December 24th to 26th. The worst conditions will be on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy snowfall in mountainous areas.
Marousakis comments:
“We have a brief calm before Christmas, but interest in the weather is rising as many plan to leave major cities. Unfortunately, all signs indicate that the weather will not be favorable, though it may not be completely prohibitive for plans.
This low-pressure system will bring two waves of severe weather:
First wave: Starting tomorrow night through Wednesday afternoon, most intense in the west, less so in central and northern areas.
Second wave: From Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon, hitting the west, central, north, and eastern Aegean islands hardest.
Christmas Day will begin with intense bad weather, especially in the west, central, and northern regions. However, conditions should gradually improve from the east by late Thursday night into Friday.”
Strong winds are expected throughout this period, alternating between southern and northern directions, but a widespread sailing ban is unlikely.
Looking Ahead: A Wintry Turn at Year-End?
While Greece may see colder weather than Christmas, forecasts for heavy winter weather with snow even in lowland areas remain uncertain, as there is no consensus among global weather models. More clarity is expected closer to the end of the year.
