Cinema: The most anticipated films coming to the big screen in 2026

From Nolan’s epic Odyssey to long-awaited sequels and bold literary adaptations, a preview of cinema’s biggest releases

Newsroom December 31 12:52

From epic blockbusters and long-awaited sequels to bold literary adaptations, 2026 is shaping up to be a landmark year for cinema. Major studio productions, A-list casts, and award-winning directors will compete for audiences’ attention—and box office dominance. Christopher Nolan’s ambitious Odyssey, the long-rumoured sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, and a provocative new take on Wuthering Heights are just some of the films expected to define the year ahead.

The Odyssey

After the global success of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan returns with his most ambitious project yet: a large-scale adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. The epic adventure boasts an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

Shot entirely with IMAX cameras across multiple international locations—including Greece—the film promises a visually immersive retelling of Odysseus’ legendary journey. The Odyssey is scheduled for release on July 16, 2026.

The Devil Wears Prada 2

Nearly two decades after The Devil Wears Prada became a cultural phenomenon, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway reunite for one of 2026’s most anticipated sequels. Interest is already at fever pitch: the film’s 60-second teaser amassed a record-breaking 181.5 million views in just 24 hours.

The sequel revisits the complicated relationship between fashion powerhouse Miranda Priestly and her former assistant Andrea Sachs. Returning cast members include Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Tibor Feldman, and Tracie Thoms. At the same time, newcomers Kenneth Branagh, Lady Gaga, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalame,t and Simone Ashley join the ensemble. The film opens in cinemas on May 1.

Hamnet

Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao enters awards-season contention once again with Hamnet, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, which Zhao co-wrote for the screen. The film explores the lesser-known personal tragedy of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes following the death of their 11-year-old son during the plague.

Starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, Hamnet is set for release on January 21.

Wuthering Heights

Emerald Fennell offers a bold and sensual reimagining of Emily Brontë’s classic novel in Wuthering Heights, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. The film revisits the destructive, obsessive love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff—an unfulfilled passion that consumes.

Early footage from the trailer, released in September, suggests an intense and provocative interpretation, with particularly daring romantic scenes. The film arrives in cinemas on February 14.

The Testament of Ann Lee

Directed by Mona Fastvold and co-written with Brady Corbet, this historical musical drama stars Amanda Seyfried as Ann Lee, the controversial 18th-century religious leader revered by her followers as a female incarnation of Christ.

The cast also includes Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Christopher Abbott, Tim Blake Nelson, and Stacy Martin. The Testament of Ann Lee is scheduled for theatrical release on February 20.
