The “map” of farmers’ roadblocks: which national highways are open and where traffic diversions are in place

The presence of tractors on the roads is leading the Traffic Police to implement temporary traffic regulations and diversions

Newsroom December 31 09:35

Greece’s road network is on heightened alert ahead of the New Year’s holiday getaway, as farmers’ roadblocks remain active at key points. Although farmers say they aim to facilitate citizens’ travel, the presence of tractors on the roads is prompting the Traffic Police to apply temporary measures and traffic diversions, in order to ensure road safety and avoid major delays.

At Kastro in Boeotia, farmers are allowing one lane of traffic in both directions on the Athens–Lamia National Highway. This arrangement will remain in effect until Monday, 5 January 2026, at 08:00, when they will reassess their stance.

The diversion is carried out at the Martino grade-separated junction, about 8 kilometers before the roadblock.

Toward Athens, traffic is routed via service roads, while toward Thessaloniki it proceeds in one lane, with alternative routes via Anthili and Atalanti.

Trucks and heavy vehicles are excluded, while passage is permitted for the transport of animals and medicines. The traffic diversion takes place at the Martino junction.

In Thebes, farmers have decided to keep both directions of traffic open until January 3.

The most time-consuming roadblock is in Boeotia, where vehicles are diverted from Martino to Kastro.

The second major bottleneck is the Nikaia junction in Larissa, with a detour of about half an hour.

Smaller detours are in place in Pieria, Nea Anchialos, and Bralos. The Malgara tolls remain open.

At the Nikaia roadblock, farmers have introduced measures to facilitate New Year travelers by opening the overpass above the blockade point.

This passage mainly serves those traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki, while travelers heading toward Athens follow bypass routes via Platykampos, the old Larissa–Volos national road, and Kileler.

The Malgara tolls remain open in both directions, as farmers at this roadblock are awaiting Saturday’s nationwide conference to be held on site, in order to determine their next steps.

Farmers from Eastern Thessaloniki—specifically those at the Prasina Fanaria roadblock—have decided not to participate in Saturday’s nationwide conference in Malgara, as they had taken a separate stance calling for immediate dialogue with the government. In a statement they issued, they note that this opportunity has been lost, as the Prime Minister has left the country.

Promachonas open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day

However, on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the Promachonas border crossing will be open to all vehicles to facilitate holiday travelers. Farmers at this roadblock emphasize that from Friday they will escalate their mobilizations. From 16:00 to 19:00, the Promachonas border station was closed to trucks in both directions.

What applies at the Evzones customs station

On New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, and the second day of the year, passage will take place normally, as announced by farmers from Kilkis and Pella.

At the Filotas roadblock, farmers continue their mobilizations, while a New Year’s celebration is being organized with the participation of local organizations as a show of support.
