Freezing conditions forced staff to close Vienna International Airport today until at least 11 a.m. (12:00 noon GMT) and restrict flights at Prague’s Wenceslas Havel Airport, the two airports announced.
A thick layer of ice formed on the runways in Vienna and continued to form on the landing and takeoff runways after efforts to clear it, a spokesman said. Flights were diverted to other airports, he added.
Freezing rain also forced Prague Airport into “very limited operation, according to a message on its X account.
Delays are expected throughout the day, and arrivals are being limited as staff work to clear the main runway of ice, he added.
