The identification process of all victims of the fatal road accident in Romania has been completed by the competent authorities. Seven PAOK supporters lost their lives, while three others were injured. At the same time, questions remain regarding the causes and circumstances under which the tragedy unfolded, shocking public opinion.
According to available information, the necessary documents are expected to be issued by the Romanian authorities on Thursday (29/1), allowing the repatriation of the bodies to proceed. Their transfer to Greece will be carried out by a military C-130 aircraft, which is currently stationed in Elefsina. The transport aircraft is also on standby to evacuate the injured passengers.
As for the injured, two are in a condition that allows them to travel back to Greece. The third, who sustained more serious injuries but is not in life-threatening condition and will require surgery, will be assessed to determine whether the operation will take place in Romania or Greece. In any case, all three have now passed the immediate danger stage.
These details were confirmed in an interview with SKAI by Giannis Loverdos, who also noted that the oldest victim of the tragedy was 30 years old.
“The steering wheel locked during overtaking,” injured PAOK fan told Greek doctor
Meanwhile, a shocking account from a survivor was relayed by Greek doctor Dimitris Koukoullas, who traveled to Romania and visited the hospital where the injured were taken.
“The steering wheel locked during overtaking due to the lane assist system,” one of the injured PAOK supporters reportedly told the Greek doctor, as Koukoullas stated in an interview with ERT.
“I spoke with two of the three injured. The patient who is in the best condition and sustained lighter injuries, mainly fractures to the lower limbs, told me that something happened with the lane assist system. During an overtaking maneuver, the lane assist locked and the steering wheel locked. The driver lost control of the vehicle because something went wrong with the lane assist. It activated and the driver could not correct the vehicle’s course,” he said.
However, it remains to be determined through the investigation whether this was indeed the case, as lane-keeping assist systems automatically deactivate when the driver uses the turn signal, recognizing an intentional lane change. In this incident, video footage appears to show that the driver had activated the indicator, meaning that if the lane assist system was functioning normally, it should not have pulled the vehicle back into its lane.
