Orange warning issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) for storm “Kristin”: Thunderstorms, strong winds and hail – Attica also affected

Which areas will be hit hardest – What the EMY emergency bulletin says – New wave of bad weather expected over the weekend

Newsroom January 29 07:50

The passage of storm Kristin today, Thursday, will be brief but intense. The strongest phenomena are expected mainly in western Greece and the islands, while the system will also pass through Attica around midday.

In an emergency bulletin, the EMY forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms and locally possible hailstorms across almost the entire country.

Attica will be affected around midday on Thursday. Eastern Macedonia will then be impacted, particularly the region of Thrace, as well as the entire eastern Aegean. At the same time, conditions also favor the transport of African dust.

The phenomena will ease on Friday, however a new wave of bad weather with rainfall across the country is expected over the weekend.

Emergency bulletin from the EMY

Orange warning

A temporary deterioration of the weather is forecast for Thursday (29/01/26), with heavy rain, thunderstorms and locally possible hail, mainly in western Greece and the eastern island regions.

Specifically, locally heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast:

Thursday (29/01/26)
a) In the Ionian Islands, Epirus, and western and central mainland Greece from early morning until midday
b) In western Peloponnese from the morning hours until late afternoon
c) In Thrace from midday until the evening
d) In the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean from the afternoon until late at night
e) In Attica temporarily around midday

What meteorologists say

In a post on his personal Facebook account, Thodoris Kolydas notes that the storm system is moving gradually eastward, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, hail and frequent lightning.

Areas expected to be affected include Western Greece, the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western mainland Greece, as well as western and southern Peloponnese.

Attica will also be affected around midday on Thursday. Eastern Macedonia will then be impacted, particularly Thrace, along with the entire eastern Aegean. The storm will weaken during Friday.

However, from Saturday into Sunday, a new wave of bad weather is expected, likely bringing more rainfall to most parts of the country.

According to meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias, weather-related problems may occur in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western Peloponnese, Aetolia-Acarnania, Phocis and Evrytania, Thrace, and the northern and eastern Aegean.

Winds in the Ionian Sea will blow at 5 to 7 Beaufort near Corfu and up to 8–9 Beaufort near Zakynthos.

“The low-pressure system named Kristin, which will affect us from tonight, is linked to a strong weather system over the western and central Mediterranean.

It was not named by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) but by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), when the phenomenon intensified and was deemed likely to cause significant severe weather in the region,” the meteorologist noted.

EMY forecast for today, Thursday 29/1
