Weather: Rain in the East as “Kristin” departs, new severe weather approaches

Rainy weather will prevail across much of the country on Friday, with phenomena weakening before a new wave of bad weather affects us from Sunday.

Cloudiness, along with rain and scattered thunderstorms, is expected on Friday in the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, with phenomena quickly weakening. In the rest of the country, cloud cover is expected, which by evening will bring rain and scattered thunderstorms to the Cyclades and Crete.

Winds will be westerly and may temporarily reach locally up to 8 Beaufort over the seas, before weakening.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) forecasts that February will “kick off” on Sunday with rain and scattered thunderstorms across most of the country.

“The new bout of bad weather over the weekend looks ‘tough’. It will affect us from Saturday night and from the west, with more intense phenomena,” says meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias. For her part, Nikoleta Ziakopoulou speaks of indications that a new weather system will arrive from Sunday, bringing rainfall mainly to southern regions, the Peloponnese, Crete, and the Aegean.

Schools closed on Friday

Due to intense weather phenomena, by decision of the Mayor of Alexandroupoli, the operation of the kindergarten and primary school in the settlement of Apalos and the junior high school in the municipal community of Antheia will be suspended on Friday. All primary and secondary schools in the municipal community of Feres and the municipal community of Sykorrachi will also remain closed.

Heavy rainfall and gale-force winds on Thursday

Yesterday, Thursday, rain and thunderstorms affected most of the country.

According to the network of automatic weather stations of meteo.gr / the National Observatory of Athens, the highest rainfall totals by 17:00 were recorded in Epirus, Thrace, and Central Greece.

At the same time, gale-force southerly winds prevailed over the seas and significant parts of Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Epirus, and Thrace. The strongest gust was recorded at Paximada Karystou, reaching 128 km/h, while gusts exceeding 100 km/h were also recorded at the stations of Mornos Dam, Sesi Parnassos, and Sagaeika Achaia.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

In the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, rain and scattered thunderstorms. The phenomena, which may be locally intense during the early hours, will quickly weaken, but will intensify again in the south during the night.

In the rest of the country, a few clouds at times increasing, with local rain mainly in the west and north, which from the evening in the southwest, Crete, and the Cyclades will intensify and be accompanied by scattered thunderstorms.

Light, temporary snowfall will occur in the northern mountainous areas.

Winds will blow from westerly directions: in the north 4–5 Beaufort, in the south 5–7 Beaufort, and temporarily locally up to 8 Beaufort over the seas, weakening from the afternoon.

Temperatures will reach 13–15°C in the northern mainland and locally 16°C in central Macedonia; 16–18°C in the rest of the country; and locally 19–20°C in Crete and the Dodecanese.

MACEDONIA, THRACE

Weather: Temporarily increased cloudiness with local rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms in the east during the early morning hours. Phenomena will quickly weaken and be confined to the east.

Light, temporary snowfall will occur in the mountainous areas of Macedonia.

Winds: Westerly–northwesterly 3–5 Beaufort. From the afternoon variable 3–4 Beaufort, and in the evening in the east easterly with the same intensity.

Temperature: From 04 to 13–15°C and locally up to 16°C in central Macedonia. In western Macedonia, minimum temperatures 3–4°C lower.

IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIRUS, WESTERN CENTRAL GREECE, WESTERN PELOPONNESE

Weather: Temporarily increased cloudiness with local rain, which will intensify in the south during the evening and be accompanied by scattered thunderstorms.

Light, temporary snowfall will occur in the mountainous areas of Epirus.

Winds: Westerly–northwesterly 4–5 Beaufort and in the south 6 Beaufort, weakening from midday. From evening in the south, westerly–southwesterly 4–6 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 06 to 16–18°C and in the interior of Epirus from 00 (zero) to 10°C.

THESSALY, EASTERN CENTRAL GREECE, EUBOEA, EASTERN PELOPONNESE

Weather: Mostly clear with temporary cloudiness, which will increase in the south during the evening, bringing local rain and, during the night, scattered thunderstorms.

Winds: Westerly 4–6 Beaufort and locally in the south up to 7 Beaufort, weakening from midday.

Temperature: From 04 to 17–18°C.

CYCLADES, CRETE

Weather: Temporary cloudiness, increasing from the afternoon in Crete and in the evening in the Cyclades, with local rain and scattered thunderstorms during the night.

Winds: Westerly 6–7 Beaufort, and from the afternoon westerly–southwesterly 4–6 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 10 to 18°C, and in Crete up to 19–20°C.

EASTERN AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANESE

Weather: Cloudiness with local rain and scattered thunderstorms. Phenomena may be locally intense during the early hours but will quickly weaken, intensifying again in the south during the night.

Winds: Westerly 4–6 Beaufort and in the south 6–7 Beaufort. From the afternoon westerly–southwesterly 4–5 Beaufort and in the south up to 6, turning in the evening in the north to easterly–southeasterly with the same intensity.

Temperature: From 13 to 18–19°C. In the north, 2–3°C lower.

ATTICA

Weather: Mostly clear with a few temporary clouds, increasing at night with local rain.

Winds: Westerly 4–6 Beaufort, and from the afternoon westerly–southwesterly 3–5 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 08 to 17°C.

THESSALONIKI

Weather: Initially cloudy with local rain, followed by rapid improvement.

Winds: Westerly–northwesterly 3–4 Beaufort, temporarily up to 5 Beaufort. From midday variable 2–4 Beaufort.

Temperature: From 05 to 15°C.

Weather on Saturday 31/1

In the west, temporarily increased cloudiness with local rain and isolated thunderstorms in the Ionian. From late evening, phenomena will intensify.

In the rest of the country, temporarily increased cloudiness with local rain and, mainly in the morning hours, scattered thunderstorms in the Aegean islands, possibly intense. From late afternoon, phenomena will stop in most areas.

Temporary snowfall will occur in the central and northern mountainous areas.

Winds will blow in the south westerly–southwesterly 4–6 Beaufort, in the north easterly–northeasterly 3–5 Beaufort, and from the evening in the Ionian southeasterly 6 Beaufort.

Temperatures will not change significantly. In the north they will reach 12–14°C, in the Ionian and the rest of the mainland 15–17°C, and in the southern Aegean 18–19°C.

Weather on Sunday 1/2

Cloudiness with rain and scattered thunderstorms across most of the country. Phenomena in the west and gradually in Thessaly, central Macedonia, and the eastern Aegean may be locally strong. Weakening is expected at night in the west.

Snowfall will occur in the mountainous areas of the mainland and from the afternoon also in the northeastern semi-mountainous areas.

Winds will blow in the north from easterly and in the south from southerly directions, 4–6 Beaufort and over the seas 7, locally 8 Beaufort.

Temperatures will drop in central and northern regions.

Weather on Monday 2/2

Temporarily increased cloudiness with local rain and, in the eastern island regions during the morning hours, scattered thunderstorms.

Snowfall will occur in the central and northern mountainous areas as well as in the semi-mountainous areas of northeastern Greece.

From the afternoon, phenomena will gradually weaken and weather will improve in the west.

Winds will blow northerly–northwesterly: in the west 4–5 Beaufort and temporarily up to 6, in the east 5–7 Beaufort and temporarily over the seas up to 8 Beaufort.

Temperatures will show a slight further drop, mainly in the east.

A few clouds temporarily increasing mainly in the west and north, with a chance of local rain.

Winds will blow in the west southerly–southeasterly 4–5 Beaufort and locally in the Ionian up to 6 Beaufort. In the east, winds will be variable 3–4 Beaufort and temporarily in the Dodecanese northwesterly 5 Beaufort.

Temperatures will show a slight rise.
