Spain bans social media for children under 16

"We will protect our children from the digital Wild West", Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said

Newsroom February 3 02:04

Spain will ban minors under 16 from accessing social media and will require platforms to implement age verification systems, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told the World Government Summit in Dubai today.

“Our children are being exposed to a space in which they should never have been alone… We will no longer accept this,” Sanchez said. “We will protect them from the digital Wild West.”

He added that his government will also submit a new bill next week that will hold social media executives accountable for illegal and hateful content.

In December, Australia became the first country to ban social media for children under 16.

The implementation of this measure is being closely monitored by other countries, including Britain and France, which are considering similar age-based measures.
