Bulgaria holds early parliamentary elections on 19 April, eighth in five years

Bulgaria's previous government resigned on 11 December after weeks of street protests over its economic policies and its perceived failure to crack down on corruption.

Bulgaria will hold early parliamentary elections on April 19, President Iliana Yotova announced.

Last week, Yotova appointed Andrei Gurov, deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, to form a caretaker government and organize the vote. The upcoming ballot will mark the country’s eighth parliamentary election in just five years.

The previous government resigned on December 11 after weeks of street protests over its economic policies and its perceived failure to tackle corruption.

“I will sign a decree scheduling elections for April 19,” Yotova said at a news conference following her meeting with Gurov, who presented the members of his interim cabinet.

Bulgaria, which joined the eurozone on January 1, has experienced prolonged political instability, as parties in the fragmented parliament have repeatedly failed to form a stable governing coalition.
