Mitsotakis from India: Priority to protect young people from digital addiction

Knowledge about AI must be shared around the world, the Prime Minister said in his speech at the "AI Impact Summit"

Newsroom February 19 11:30

The need to protect young people from digital addiction, calling it a “priority” on the part of the Greek government, was mentioned, among other things, by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his remarks at the “AI Impact Summit” being held in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“We need to protect young people from digital addiction and this is a priority issue. I stand in solidarity with France, which has moved to ban teenagers’ access to social networks,” Mitsotakis said.

As protothema.gr wrote earlier, next week, at the cabinet meeting, it is estimated that the digital “cut-off” on social media for children up to 15 years of age may be presented.

Calling the rise in the use of Artificial Intelligence a “technological and cultural revolution”, the Greek prime minister stressed that “knowledge about AI and know-how must be shared around the world.”

As he noted in this context, “AI has the potential to create huge changes in technology and medicine and these benefits should be distributed to others beyond the big companies. Small and medium-sized enterprises should also gain access to AI tools, as should public services.”

He also called for answers to “valid concerns about large workforce shifts.”

“The story of AI cannot be a story of exclusion but of inclusion. If we want AI to serve society, the state must update its systems. Public bodies and governments should invest in infrastructure and expertise between ministries and other agencies. The countries that succeed will not only be those that build strong models but also those that manage them well. Information is very important and should be shared and I would like to see more open dialogue,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis concluded.
