Behind the total economic footprint of €1 billion, there is a large volume of specific projects and funding approvals that show how the audiovisual production support model works in practice. From 2019 to today, the EKOME has approved 1,297 projects for public funding, of which 1,098 have already received support, with total public expenditure reaching €277.1 million.

At the same time, €607.4 million in private capital has been mobilized, while from September 2024 until today alone, €131.1 million has been disbursed—amounting to 47.3% of the total public spending since 2019. The portfolio is dominated by the cash rebate scheme with €249.8 million, followed by selective programs and funding through the Recovery and Resilience Facility. Based on these data, particular interest lies in the largest international and domestic productions that have already received support, as well as those in the final evaluation stage, as they show how the numbers translate into specific projects and budgets.

Under Final Evaluation

Starting with the pipeline of projects in the final evaluation stage, the spotlight first falls on major international productions that have chosen Greece for filming, with funding decisions concerning eligible expenses of tens of millions of euros.

• “The Riders”: The production by Brad Pitt, which begins filming in Hydra and Athens, is expected to receive €2.5–3 million. The total eligible expenses declared for filming in Greece amount to €8 million.
• “The Odyssey”: The highly anticipated project by director Christopher Nolan, featuring Hollywood stars such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal, is expected to receive €7 million via cash rebate, with eligible expenses in Greece reaching €17.5 million.
• “Sacrifice”: The film by Romain Gavras, shot largely in Greece and starring Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Salma Hayek, John Malkovich and Vincent Cassel, had eligible expenses of €12 million and is expected to receive €4.8 million in rebate.
• “Tehran” (Season 4): The Tehran series, which continues filming in Greece, had eligible expenses of €16.5 million and is expected to receive €6.5 million.
• “The Carpenter’s Son”: Starring Nicolas Cage, the production incurred €3.5 million in eligible expenses in Greece and is expected to receive €1.5 million.
• “Assassin”: The Amazon Prime series starring Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore is expected to receive €6.5 million, with eligible expenses of €16.3 million.
• “House of David”: The successful Amazon Prime series has conducted extensive filming in Greece. Eligible expenses have reached €55.4 million (across two seasons), with a total rebate of €22 million (€11 million per season).
• “Kabul”: The international co-production, involving COSMOTE TV, depicting the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in 2021, is expected to receive €4 million in rebate for €10 million spent in Greece.
• “Maria”: The biopic about Maria Callas, starring Angelina Jolie, had limited filming in Greece. For €1 million in eligible expenses, producers are expected to receive €400,000.
• “So Long, Marianne”: The series about the relationship between Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen filmed extensively on Hydra. Eligible expenses amounted to €8.2 million, with a €3.2 million rebate expected.

Greek Projects

Alongside major international productions, significant domestic film and TV projects are also in final evaluation:

• “Kapodistrias”: The successful film production by director Yannis Smaragdis is expected to receive €854,000 via cash rebate, with eligible expenses of €2.135 million.
• “Broken Vein”: The latest film by Yannis Economides, starring Vasilis Bisbikis, is expected to receive €524,000 for eligible expenses of €1.31 million.
• “I Exist”: The biographical film about Stelios Kazantzidis has received and will receive just over €1 million for €2.12 million in eligible expenses—€850,000 via rebate and €280,000 via selective programs.
• “Rififi”: The mini-series by Sotiris Tsafoulias had eligible expenses of €1.2 million and is expected to receive €480,000.
• “The Great Chimera”: The highly promoted ERT series based on the novel by M. Karagatsis had eligible expenses of €4.8 million, with producers applying for a €1.9 million rebate.

Who Received the Most

Among productions that have already received the largest public funding amounts:

• “Killer Heat”: Based on a short story by Jo Nesbo, the production approached €25 million in scale and received €10.72 million in rebate. Filming took place mainly in Crete, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden.
• Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery: The Netflix hit starring Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson and Ethan Hawke was largely filmed in Greece and received €7.51 million in rebate.
• “The Enforcer”: Starring Antonio Banderas, it received €4.93 million.
• “Bricklayer”: Starring Aaron Eckhart, it received €4.78 million.
• Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (Season 3): Starring John Krasinski, it received €4.48 million.
• Crimes of the Future: Starring Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart, it received €3.64 million.
• “Malice”: The British psychological thriller series starring David Duchovny and Carice van Houten received €3.42 million.
• “Karantina”: Starring James Franco, it received €3 million.
