Mitsotakis meets Merkel in Berlin

ND leader and German Chancellor agree Greece's place in the Eurozone

Newsroom February 13 04:32

Greece’s main opposition party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis agreed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Greece belonged in the core of the common currency union during their meeting in Berlin. The president of conservative party New Democracy (ND), which has been leading in the polls by a steady margin against ruling leftist SYRIZA, tabled his economic plans for Greece’s exit from the current economic crisis to the German politician during their 1-hour meeting at Mrs. Merkel’s CDU party headquarters. According to sources, Mr. Mitsotakis voiced his concern regarding the high levels of unemployment and the resulting social problems, highlighting the issue of widespread poverty, as well as the need for speedy reforms. Mr. Mitsotakis estimated that the delays in the completion of the second review of the Greek bailout program was leading to the country’s creditors to making unreasonable demands. The two politicians also discussed the refugee-immigration crisis, with the leader of ND requesting material and political support from Germany. Greece is the first country of entry into the EU and has come under immense pressure by the migration flows.
