Greeks lead the global race in ship ownership with 17%

The Chinese came in a close second with 15%

Newsroom November 19 01:31

Greek-owned shipping remained at the top of the global shipping industry in 2021 with 17%, as the ‘battle of the sea’ against the Chinese continued with undiminished intensity. Ships of Chinese interests represent 15%, followed by the Japanese with 12%

The statistics come from the 68-page report “IUMI 2021” of the International Maritime Insurance Association – IUMI. The data is up to date until August 2021. Analysts predict that in the coming years, China will strongly challenge the Greek dominance.

It should be noted that Asian companies control a total of 42% of the global fleet compared to 20% of the European. Greece is followed in Europe by Germany with only 4%.
