Severe weather sweeps across Greece with strong winds and rain (photos-videos)

There have been some river overflows reported

Newsroom December 11 03:22

The extreme weather with strong winds is sweeping across Greece.

The bad weather has caused problems in Epirus, where Kalamas and Acheron rivers are on the verge of overflowing. Authorities have opened the dam at Kalamas to deal with the situation and avoid severe flooding.

In Acheron, things are more difficult, especially in Gliki and Ammoudia, as the second instance overflowing is already starting, according to reports.

As epiruspost.gr writes, the Terovo junction of the Ionian Road was closed earlier due to intense floods in the area. Traffic has been banned at the entrance and exit, however, vehicles are moving normally in the Ionian highway as there is no problem from the severe weather phenomena.

The settlements around Acheron are also on alert, which, as the images show, are overflowing.

The settlement of Kamaretseika Zevgaraki in Agrinio is being evacuated

Meanwhile, the mayor of Agrinio, George Papanastasiou, ordered the immediate evacuation of the settlement of Kamareceika Zevgaraki at noon on Saturday, due to the sharp rise in the water level in Lake Lysimachia, caused by bad weather.

According to Papanastasiou, the evacuation is preventive and there is no immediate danger to the residents and their property.

The Regional Unit of Trikala is trying to deal with rocks falling due to the bad weather, on the mountainous road network and the waters on the road, in order to make the movements safely with 22 machines.

According to what the deputy governor of Trikala, Christos Michalakis, emphasises speaking to Athens News Agency, the water level in the rivers is on the rise. “We are vigilant, in order to avoid the worst,” said Mr. Michalakis, while advising citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.

A power outage occurred in several areas in the center town of Corfu due to a cable failure on Kyprou Street. The crews are working on the restoration. In addition, many areas of the central municipality are without electricity for many hours.

There have been multiple power supply problems across the island, as due to the strong winds, the power supply network has been damaged.

Bad weather has created problems in the electricity supply of the southern suburbs of Athens with outages reported in Voula, Vouliagmeni, and Ano Glyfada.
