Canadian truckers’ ‘freedom convoy’ – European truckers plan similar protests, French media says

The organisers plan to start on Valentine's Day

Newsroom February 3 10:30

The Canadian truckers’ “freedom convoy” is spilling over Europe, as the French newspaper “Le Figaro” reports that it is inspiring other truckers on the continent who are expected to demonstrate in Belgium in February. The Canadian truckers who crossed the streets of the Canadian capital with their heavy vehicles openly challenging the health measures have caused chaos on the roads in their peaceful protests against the mandatory covid measures imposed on the Canadians by Justin Trudeau.

According to the French newspaper, the movement was triggered by the mandate of mandatory vaccination for truckers crossing the US-Canada border, which was implemented by the government of the Canadian Prime Minister earlier this month.

Upset by the new measure that required unvaccinated Canadian truckers crossing the border to be quarantined as soon as they return home, a group of truckers and conservatives began organising the movement that began in western Canada.

In the process, however, he gained many supporters, who are already opposed to Trudeau and his policies as they have been disappointed with the pandemic measures. The movement, which has received the “blessings” of former US President Donald Trump and Tesla tycoon and CEO Elon Musk, has grown with the participation of opponents of health restrictions.

In France, Jean-Frédéric Poisson, president of the Via party and a supporter of the nationalist Eric Zemmour, is one of the movement’s strongest supporters.

On Facebook, the “freedom convoy” gathered until yesterday, with more than 100,000 people since January 26 when it acquired an online presence, something that is reminiscent of the “Yellow Vest” movement.

Through the Telegram messaging platform, instructions are being sent for a large European demonstration on Valentine’s Day. The date is for February 14 in Brussels, as the newspaper Le Figaro explains.

From the 9th to the 11th of February, the protesters will gather in Paris and then head to the Belgian capital. A man named Remo Mont, a spokesman for the Convoy of France movement, is said to be in contact with other European movements, giving instructions through the Telegram platform.

The message clarifies that the European “convoy of freedom” is not limited to truckers as anyone opposed to the restrictive measures against the pandemic is welcomed to take part.
