Your Guide to Thasos

For those who love to roam, many hiking paths cross the island leading to traditional hillside villages, stunning gorges, and mysterious explorable caves

Newsroom May 25 11:58

Thasos is a perfect holiday destination if you’re looking to ‘get away from it all’. Located on the northern side of the Aegean Sea, this green and calm Isle boasts a broad variety of beautiful sandy beaches for a relaxing swim in clean waters, as well as thick forests and mountains for the more adventurous. From the picture-postcard views to the tourist friendly tavernas, the full Greek island experience is here.

Thasos is popular with families, and unlike many islands, there is an excellent bus network taking visitors across the island. You can leave the car at home, and still get to explore. History and a vibrant, age-old culture can be witnessed everywhere. Visit The Ancient Agora and the Ancient Greek temple at Alyki on the serene southeast coast. Head to the 18th century Monastery of Archangel Michael in Livadi, just 25 km south of the main town, for spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. And definitely make the trip to Theologos, a traditional village and the old capital of Thasos, to find the Folklore Museum.

For those who love to roam, many hiking paths cross the island leading to traditional hillside villages, stunning gorges, and mysterious explorable caves. Hike to the top of Mount Ypsarion, located at the centre of the Thasos; the lush mountain, resplendent with pine trees, is the backdrop for white, sandy Thasos. At its summit, you can enjoy views spanning across the entire island. If hiking isn’t exerting enough, you can also rent a mountain bike for a thrilling ride with plenty of great views.
